About Tim Matthews BSc MD FRCS (Tr & Orth)
Tim Matthews is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon who specialises in treating injuries and chronic conditions of the shoulder and elbow.
His expertise is in both open and arthroscopic (Keyhole) surgery to the shoulder and elbow, and he uses the latest evidenced based techniques and procedures to ensure a rapid return to your desired level of activity.
Tim graduated from St Bartholomew’s Medical College in London with his medical degree and a first class honours degree in Science. He trained as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bristol, Bath and Swindon, and completed his training in Oxford under Professor Andrew Carr.
Tim spent two years in post-graduate research at the University of Oxford funded by prestigious research scholarships from the University of Oxford and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
His research into shoulder tendon disease was widely acclaimed. He was awarded a doctorate in Medicine from the University of London, received the Lipmann Kessel prize (British Elbow and Shoulder Society) two years in a
row (never previously or since been achieved) and the highest honour bestowed, by the British Orthopedic Association, the Robert Jones Gold Medal.
Tim now leads his own research group working with the Arthritis Research UK Centre at the University of Cardiff, investigating degenerative conditions of the shoulder and elbow.
Tim has continued to pursue excellence and understanding in upper limb surgery. He was awarded the highly sought after Mayo Elbow travelling fellowship to work with Professor Shawn O’Driscoll, recognized as the world leader of Elbow surgery, at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA.
Tim teaches and lectures regionally, nationally and internationally on conditions effecting the shoulder and elbow and represents the British Elbow and Shoulder Society by serving on its research committee.
